My Gear

It took me a while to search around review forums, blogs and almost all around internet to finally establish my equipment set for my photography needs. There are hundreds of sites and forums where one can find recommendations and tips, but the process of searching and making a decision to buy is pains taking and long. I went through the long process and have ended up with a setup that I like much and serve my needs very well. I thought, it would be good to setup a gallery of my gear for reference for other enthusiasts to help them make the right decisions. Also, I am asked several times what camera, lens etc I use and hence this gallery should be a good reference for such folks.

I have been a Nikon fan for years and continue to be one. As such, entire information in this section is all about Nikon, sorry Canon folks ;) ! Thanks to Nikon for making such wonderful camera and lenses - without them everything would have been impossible ! Not to forget, Wimberley, Gitzo, Lenscoat, Visual Echoes, Apple, Adobe and others who have made great products to complete the entire digital shooting platform.

  • AF-S Teleconverter TC-14E II - Must have for bird photography. Gets me effective 850mm one stop down on 600mm f/4 lens with FX D3S body. Autofocus is fast and results remain sharp as ever.
  • AF-S Teleconverter TC-17E II - Must have for bird photography. Gets me effective 1000mm two stop down on 600mm f/4 lens with FX D3S body. Autofocus is fast but hunts sometimes (for getting birds in flight), though results remain sharp as ever.
  • Got these cheap Triplus extension tubes to try to go beyond 1:1 macro magnification. Used it couple of times, but no great results.
  • The Nikon R1C1 Wireless Close-Up Speedlight System. Pretty creative on how this was designed - i don't use this frequently but am sure will be necessary in low light conditions and for fill-in. Comes with SU-800 wireless commander which can be used with other supported Nikon flash guns.
  • Nikon SC-29 Off-Camera AF TTL Cord for use with SB-900 & 600mm f/4 using Wimberley flash bracket.
  • ML-3 Modulite Remote Control Set - I got this for remote shutter release to minimize vibrate due to handheld shutter release. Works great on autofocus and as with continuous mode at good range. I mount the receiver on the Wimberley F-1 telephoto bracket instead of the D3S shoe as the D3S shoe is already occupied with the SC-29.
  • Here is the complete range of camera bodies, lenses and flash guns that I have as of now. Details on each and what I use when will follow in next photographs

  • The Wimberley F-3 Telephoto/Macro Kit. On top is the F-1 Telephoto Bracket and below is the M-4 Macro Arm.
  • FX-6 Better Beamer flash extender from Visual Echoes attached to Nikon SB-900 flash for telephoto flash photography. Must have for long lens flash photography.
  • My very first tripod (Velbon Carmagne 630 III E bought from Japan) and ball head (Velbon QHD-71Q). I dont use this anymore. Before this my brother had gifted us Slik tripod, which broke and was discarded.
  • Over years I have added capacity and as of now I carry these 6 SanDisk compact flash cards always with me on my trips. Total of 64 GB.
  • Moshi multi-card reader. Good reader comes with extended usb cable and a key chain attachment. Reads almost all kinds of cards. I like it.
  • Wimberley PP-100 Plamp along with PP-110 Plamp Extension.
  • These are additional accessories that I always carry with me. A poncho to protect me and my bodies/lenses in case of uneventful rain. Lens cleaning kit, lens cleaning paper, extra D3S battery and Giottos rocket blower.

  • Closed view of Nikon CT-607 hard case for Nikon 600mm.
  • Lowepro - Lens Trekker 600 AW II - Excellent bag and houses my Nikon 600mm when traveling. However the hood has to be in the reverse position if keeping body attached to it. Pretty good backpack, has good room for flash cards and other accessories. Was able to take on international flight as carry on baggage. I went through a lot of fact finding on using Think Tank Airport Security v2.0 or Pelican hard cases etc. and I finally decided on this one as I needed a proper backpack that I can hike with.
  • Lowepro - Nature Trekker AW II - I use it for my macro trips - It is very tough, waterproof and comes with day pack.
  • Got this dry cabinet from Shanghai. Branded as "Wonderful", it serves my purpose and currently houses all my bodies and lenses (except the 600mm).
