My Gear

It took me a while to search around review forums, blogs and almost all around internet to finally establish my equipment set for my photography needs. There are hundreds of sites and forums where one can find recommendations and tips, but the process of searching and making a decision to buy is pains taking and long. I went through the long process and have ended up with a setup that I like much and serve my needs very well. I thought, it would be good to setup a gallery of my gear for reference for other enthusiasts to help them make the right decisions. Also, I am asked several times what camera, lens etc I use and hence this gallery should be a good reference for such folks.

I have been a Nikon fan for years and continue to be one. As such, entire information in this section is all about Nikon, sorry Canon folks ;) ! Thanks to Nikon for making such wonderful camera and lenses - without them everything would have been impossible ! Not to forget, Wimberley, Gitzo, Lenscoat, Visual Echoes, Apple, Adobe and others who have made great products to complete the entire digital shooting platform.

  • My bird photography and macro photography setup side by side.
  • AF-S NIKKOR 600mm f/4G ED VR - This is my baby, my favt new toy ! I had been dreaming of this lens for years and finally made the decision to get one ! Excellent, excellent and sharp lens - but BIG ! Here it is next to my Yorkshire Terrier (tillu). I went through a lot of thinking going between 500mm vs 600mm and finally decided for 600mm and am glad that I got this monster. Even with 1.7x converter, sometime I feel the range shorter - especially while shooting birds here in China where they are very shy and scared of people. I have used Lenscoat here to protect and for camouflage.
  • AF Micro- NIKKOR 200mm f/4D IF-ED - I got this lens to get the extra range. This is a pretty old lens from Nikon is due for refresh. It is heavy and not good for handheld macro shots, atleast I couldn't get decent handheld shots but other folks do claim it is possible..hmmm ! It is extremely sharp, great bokeh and good minimum focusing distance to give 1:1. Nikon does not have any lens that goes beyond the 1:1 magnification...something that they should work on !
  • This is one of the first lens (Sigma 24-70mm f/3.5-5.6) within the camera set that my brother Arif Khan gifted to me. I used this extensively in my initial years for street photography. I don't use it any more, but have kept it safely for memories.
  • This is second lens (Sigma 70-300mm f/4-5.6) within the camera set that my brother Arif Khan gifted to me. I used this extensively in my initial years for street photography. I don't use it any more, but have kept it safely for memories.
  • AF Fisheye-NIKKOR 16mm f/2.8D - very nice lens and I did some creative people shots initially with my F5 body. Comes with filters that go on the back.
  • Nikkor AF Zoom 24-85mm f/2.8-4D - This is the first lens that I bought for street photography. Used it quite a lot in the initial years, but when I got my 17-35mm, I haven't used it that much.
  • The AF-S Zoom-Nikkor 17-35mm f/2.8D IF-ED - One of my favt. lens and have used it extensively for people photography - provides very good wide-angle and is excellent. Highly recommended.
  • Nikkor 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6D ED VR AF Lens - This is one lens that I have used the most for portrait / people photography. Quite a light weight and rugged lens that has backpacked with me in tough conditions. I still use this lens for people / portraits. I tried wildlife with this lens, the results were okay but not that great as compared to prime lenses. I am planning to replace this with the new 70-200mm f/2.8 !
  • AF-S VR Micro-NIKKOR 105mm f/2.8G IF-ED - This is my macro baby. It is amazingly sharp, light weight the VR allows handheld shots and is extremely fast with great bokeh. I use this extensively for macro photography and is a must must must have ! The only thing is that to get 1:1 you need to have a close focusing distance, which can be difficult with shy / dangerous insects. I also, use this lens for people / portraits and is really great for that purpose. I usually carry this around wherever I go.
  • This is my entire lens range in order of when I got them. The oldest on the right and the latest on the left.
  • My very first SLR camera that my brother (Arif Khan) gifted me. Nikon N6006 - this body has been used extensively and has been exposed to all sorts of extreme conditions - my love with Nikon started with this and it continues. I took many great shots with this body and the two sigma lenses that were gifted to me. I don't use this any more. but have kept for memories.
  • My Nikon N6006 from back side. The back cover was broken and I had put adhesive tape to get it going and it surprisingly worked well for many months, before I got my F5
  • My first pro SLR buy - Nikon F5 ! Got it as soon as it was released and did a lot of my film photography with it. Still in very good condition, it stays in my dry cabinet resting.
  • Nikon D200 ..my first digital SLR body. I bought this cautiously as digital was still evolving. Great camera and gave me very good shots. I still use it as my DX format camera for macro photography and for extended range if needed on my 600mm.
  • Nikon D3S ! High ISO and 11fps, thats what I got this for. It makes bird photography much easier and much possible to capture events invisible to naked eye ! I love this since I have had it. Worth a buy.
  • Nikon SB-28 flash gun, got it when I got my F5 body. Dont use it any more. Resting next to my F5.
  • My very old Teleplus 2X converter that I tried with my 80-400mm for bird / wildlife photography. Didnt go that far with this and I dont use it anymore.
  • The new SB-900 ! Great with Beater Beamer for bird photography.
